Synthetic biology is a rapidly expanding field of research which uses engineering principles to design and construct nucleic acid-encoded biological parts, devices, systems, machines, and organisms. It provides a toolkit for a wide variety of challenges, such as the production of fuels, chemicals and improved materials, as well as the extraction of value from primary resources and waste.

Scientific Reports, a journal from the Nature Research family, is proud to welcome original primary research articles for our upcoming “Synthetic biology for environmental and industrial applications” Collection.

Synthetic biology tools can be used for nature conservation, remediation of contaminated sites, sensing and monitoring contaminants, and control of invasive species. This Collection will focus on environmental and industrial applications of synthetic biology.

Submissions for this Collection will be open through the end of January 2020. More information about this Collection and how to submit a manuscript can be found here.

The Collection is Guest Edited by Dr Anna Kaksonen, who currently leads the Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology Group at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia. Dr Kaksonen has a Doctor of Technology in Environmental Biotechnology, an MSc (Engineering) in Environmental Technology and an MSc in Environmental Science and Policy. Her current work is focused on the development of tools and biotechnical solutions for sustainable industrial processes, resource recovery from waste streams, pollution prevention, remediation of contaminated environments, and mitigation of microbially caused problems. She has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2015.
